ἦχος Chant Studio

Hi, I'm Joshua Boyd, a chanter and teacher of Byzantine music.

About Me

I’m a life-long musician who has loved and studied Byzantine chant for more than 25 years.

With an early background in classical music, I was first introduced to Byzantine chant in the late ’90s. Since then, I’ve been honored to chant with and study under many incredible masters of the craft, especially Fr. John El-Massih, Lefteris Chasanidis, and Samuel Herron.

Since 2022, I have served as the Protopsaltis of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville, FL. Before moving to Florida, my family and I lived in Atlanta for more than a decade where I led the left choir as Lampadarios at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. While there, I also served for a time as the Pastoral Assistant before our move to Florida.

Apart from the chant stand, I teach lessons privately in Jacksonville and remotely online. If you're interested in learning to chant, looking to hire a chanter, or just want to say “hello,” I’d love to hear from you!

How to Learn

The easiest way, by far, to learn Byzantine music is to study with and chant alongside a teacher.

That isn't always possible, though. Many of us who are interested in learning to chant live where there are simply no chanters with enough experience to teach.

In recent years, online lessons have become an incredible second-best solution. There are several online schools of Byzantine music that have started over the past several years and teachers who have started offering private lessons online. In 2025, after receiving requests from enough of my own students, I expanded from the in-person teaching I've done for more than a decade and began offering online private lessons.

If you're just starting out in Byzantine Chant or a seasoned journeyman (or journeywoman) chanter looking to improve to the next level with private lessons online or in the Jacksonville area, please reach out.
