Diphthongs stay in one syllable: αι ει οι υι αυ ευ ηυ ου, unless a diaeresis separates them. Every other pair of vowels is two syllables, as sung: Κυ-ρι-ον, ο-θο-νι-α.

A single consonant between vowels starts the next syllable. A cluster starts the next syllable when a Greek word can begin with it (ε-δρα-μον, Χρι-στου, κο-σμος); otherwise it is split (εν-δον, αλ-λος, αγ-γε-λος). Double consonants always split. ζ ξ ψ count as one letter.

γκ μπ ντ τσ τζ are split by default (εγ-κω-μι-α). Tick the last option for the modern school-grammar division (ε-γκω-μι-α).
